Visualisation and imaging is a way of revealing a whole new world around us. Materials science and engineering is a topic that spans the natural and human-made world. It’s the understanding of how and why materials behave the way they do and how to improve them. Prof Richard Johnston uses X-ray microscopes to see inside materials and structures to understand their behaviour. He says that on any day he could be looking for defects in manufactured parts, imaging the hidden microstructures in nature or understanding the secrets of Egyptian animal mummies. Along with his academic career in materials science and engineering at Swansea University in the UK, Rich is also Founder and Director of the Research as Art competition that provides a platform for researchers to convey the importance, emotion, beauty and humanity of their research.
