Before you apply please make sure you are eligible to take part in this competition!

Heats 2020

The national auditions will be in Sofia on:

  • Saturday 29 February 2020, from 10.00 to 16.00 (in two rounds) at TechnoMagicLand, 111B Tsarigradsko Shose, Sofia Tech Park, "Experimentarium" building.
    The application deadline is Wednesday 26 February 2020.
  • Saturday 14 March 2020 from 10.00 to 16.00 (in two rounds) at Alma Alter theatre hall, Sofia University, 15 Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd.
    The application deadline is Wednesday 11 March 2020.
    IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to the cancellatin of all public events at the Sofia University, the heat on 14 March will be held online. All registered applicants will receive technical joining instructions via email. 

Registration

  1. Download the registration form from the link below, fill it in and email it to famelab.bulgaria@britishcouncil.bg

  2. We will contact you by email to confirm the receipt of your application and inform you of the details and next steps.

  3. Come to the audition and present your scientific topic to our panel of judges! Don't forget to invitе your friends and family to come and watch and support you! Find out what happens at the heats, there are some rules you need to know about.

Video entry

If you are not in Sofia and are still undecided about travelling for the heat, you can send a video entry by 26 February 2020

The jury will judge the video entries during the first heats on 29 February and will invite the best candidates to the live heat on 14 March. British Council will cover reasonable travel expenses (bus or train tickets) of the candidates invited to the heat, if traveling from another city within Bulgaria.

Video entry rules

  • Videos should be up to 3 minutes long (content will not be judged after this time limit)
  • Contain no editing or special effects
  • Have no background music (unless this is what you are talking about)
  • Not involve other people or excessive props (follow the guideline for the live heats which is 'a prop you can carry on stage'). 

We are not assessing video/filming quality. We simply need to be able to clearly hear and see you, so there is no problem submitting entries filmed on a smartphone or camera etc.

Video submission instructions

  • Upload your video to YouTubeVimeo or another video hosting site and copy the link. Please note: you do not have to list the video as 'public'. Upload it as 'hidden' or 'private' if you prefer
  • Fill out the registration form and paste the link to your video in the relevant field
  • As a precaution, please also email the link to famelab.bulgaria@britishcouncil.bg with "FameLab Bulgaria video entry" in the subject line.

What's next?

If you are successful after the heats you must be able to attend a Science Communication Masterclass and the national final.

Masterclass

The masterclass will be led by a UK trainer who will help you develop invaluable media and presentation skills. It will take place on 25 and 26 April 2020.

National final

All finalists who complete the masterclass will take part in the FameLab national final in Bulgaria on Sunday 17 May 2020. The national final is one of the big events of the Sofia Science Festival.

International final

The national winner will represent Bulgaria at FameLab International in the UK. The international final will take place during the Cheltenham Science Festival between 2 and 7 June 2020.
