Join with your kids, family and friends

Let them experience the world of opportunities which language learning opens. You can also watch and connect with representatives of other countries' cultural institutes in Bulgaria and find out the best opportunities for language learning. 

Participants

The event is an initiative of the network of European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) and is organised in partnership with embassies and cultural institutes of many other countries.

Europe is rich in languages

  • There are about 225 indigenous languages in Europe.
  • Languages are related to each other like the members of a family. Most European languages belong to the large Indo-European family.
  • Most European languages belong to three broad groups: Germanic, Romance and Slavic.
  • The non-European languages most widely used on European territory are Arabic, Chinese and Hindi, each with its own writing system.
  • Due to the influx of migrants and refugees, Europe has become largely multilingual. In London alone some 300 languages are spoken.

You are never too old to learn a language

  • Even if you only know a few words of the language of the country that you visit, this enables you to make new friends and contacts. 
  • Learning other peoples' languages is a way of helping us to understand each other better and overcome our cultural differences.

Who organises the European Day of Languages?

  • The European Day of Languages has been celebrated since 2001 when it was one of the highlights of the European Year of Languages. The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided that this day would be celebrated each year to promote multilingualism.
  • The event in Bulgaria is an initiative of the network of European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) and is organised in partnership with embassies and cultural institutes of many other countries.
